Living Abroad in Costa Rica

Erin Van Rheenen has made the move to Costa Rica herself, and in Living Abroad Costa Rica, she uses her know-how to provide insight and firsthand advice on navigating the language and culture of this beautiful country. Erin outlines all the information you need including how to obtain visas, arrange finances, set up your daily life, gain employment, and choose schools in a smart, organized, and straightforward manner, making planning the move abroad manageable. Living Abroad Costa Rica also includes practical advice for a variety of needs and budgets on how to rent or buy a home, whether it’s a condo in the San José suburb of Escazú, a wooden house in coastal Tortuguero, or a mountain retreat with a view of Arenal Volcano.

With color and black and white photos, illustrations, and maps to help you find your bearings, Living Abroad Costa Rica makes the transition process easy for tourists, business people, adventurers, students, teachers, professionals, families, couples, and retirees looking to relocate.

Behind the Book

When I arrived in Costa Rica in 2001, I didn’t realize I was embarking on a lifelong relationship with that country. Researching Living Abroad in Costa Rica took me from coast to coast and everywhere in between, as I sought out expats and locals, surfers, shopkeepers, and government officials.  I’m also the author of Costa Rica Trip Ideas, an itinerary-based app, and The Manatee’s Big Day, a science-based, bilingual children’s book.

Besides living in Costa Rica, I spent two years in Quito, Ecuador, and a year in Oaxaca, Mexico. My articles on Latin America have been widely published, with subjects ranging from a macaw rescue center to a young filmmaker’s first feature. I’ve been interviewed about everything from moving abroad in general to the “Google border war” between Costa Rica and Nicaragua. And I’ve been a consultant for businesses and individuals looking to relocate.
